FOREIGN TERRORIST ORGANIZATIONS
( AS OF SEPTEMBER 2022 )
OVERVIEW
Revolutionary Struggle (Epanastatikos Agonas, or EA) is a largely defunct anarchist Greece-based terrorist organization that emerged in 2003 following CT pressure against earlier Greek anarchist groups, most notably the group “17 November.” EA holds antiglobalist and anticapitalist views, opposes the United States and multilateral organizations such as the EU and NATO, and aims to overthrow the Greek Government.
EA conducted its last successful attack in 2014. Greek authorities arrested the group’s leaders—husband and wife Nikolaos Maziotis and Pola Roupa—in 2014 and 2017, respectively. These arrests, along with follow-on arrests of other EA members, disrupted the group’s ability to conduct operations. Its remaining members are often linked to other anarchist groups in Greece, such as Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei (Synomosia Pyrinon tis Fotias).

TACTICS AND TARGETS
From 2003 to 2014, EA attacked Greek and US Government buildings, the Athens Stock Exchange, and offices of major foreign corporations. From 2012 to 2014, EA was also linked to several Greek bank robberies, probably to help fund its operations. Most of EA’s attacks used explosives, including IEDs, vehicle-borne IEDs, and parcel bombs. EA also used small arms, which Greek authorities commonly found and seized during CT raids against the group. The group sometimes conducted attacks at night or in the early morning and called in bomb threats before attacks to limit casualties.
FOREIGN TERRORIST GROUP DESIGNATION
The US State Department designated EA as a foreign terrorist organization in June 2009.
